Answer #1

IBM 650.

Okay, before discussing about it's processor, we should know that IBM 650 was the most popular first generation computer.

During that time, cards were used instead of the chips. It used punched cards and magnetic tape, cost almost a quarter million dollars at the time, and could only execute 966 instructions per second unlike to those of which are used today which can execute billions of instruction.

It was generally known as automatic calculator, the first ever invented by IBM, later given the computational term.

We are interested in realising a processor with 8 registers instead of 4. Discuss the changes that would be required to the instruction encoding to realise such a processor. Explain what other changes the instruction encoding would lead to, and how this would affect on the functionality of the processor.

Consider a laser pointer that emits red light with wavelength 650 nm. This light is used for a photoelectric effect experiment where the anode in the evacuated glass tube is made up of a material that has work function equal to 1 eV. You expect that IBM will have earnings per share of $2.50 for the coming year. IBM plans to retain all of its earnings for years 1-3. For the subsequent two years (years 4 and 5), the firm plans on retaining 40% of its earnings. It will then retain only 10% of its earnings from that point forward. Retained earnings will be invested in projects with an expected return of 15% per year. If IBM's equity cost of capital is 12%,...
