Consider the truss shown in (Figure 1). Suppose that FFF = 7 kNkN .

Figure

1 of 1The figure shows a truss consisting of 21 members joined by 12 pins. The pins at A, B, C, D, E, F and G are located on the same horizontal line at a distance of 2 meters from each other from left to right in this order. The pin at A is fixed on a horizontal surface and the pin at G is on rollers on the same horizontal surface. The pins at L and H are above B and F, respectively. The pins at K, J and I are 3 meters above C, D and E, respectively. The pins at A, L and K lie on the same line. The pins at G, H and I lie on the same line. The members are AB, BC, CD, DE, EF, FG, GH, HI, IJ, JK, KL, LA, LB, BK, KC, CJ, JD, JE, EI, IF and FH. Forces of 4 kilonewtons, 5 kilonewtons and 6 kilonewtons are applied at B, C and F, respectively, and are directed downward. Force F is applied at E and is directed downward.

Part A

Determine the force in member HIHI of the truss, and state if the member is in tension or compression.

Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Enter negative value in the case of compression and positive value in the case of tension.
