For high strength and high durability concrete , the considerations in the mix design are

  • The w/c ratio -Water cement ratio is an important parameter in setting the strength of concrete as Lower the w/c ratio , higher is the strength of concrete and higher the w/c ratio , lower is the strength of concrete. In concrete with higher water cement ratio, water added is more whereas in concrete with low water cement ratio , the water added is less.
  • Admixtures - Admixtures are substances which enhance the property of concrete , provided suitable admixtures are used . Admixtures like plasticizers can improve the strength as well as durability of concrete.

For Sustainable steel structures , the design considerations are

  • Proper Planning - The main objective of sustainable design is to lessen the use of energy , avoid wastage of water and other natural resources , lessen the overall cost etc. Proper planning of the structure can help in achieving the objectives of a sustainable design .
  • Waste minimization - Steel is a reusable component , if the building is to be demolished after some time , reusable components can be used. Welding of steel attaches steel components in a permanent way and may cause wastage when they are separated afterwards , usage of bolts for fastening or attaching steel components to one another can minimize waste .Such ideas need to be implemented to make the idea of sustainable design a success.
