Explain the difference between the terms peak and residual shear strength in relation to loose sands and dense sands.

Answer #1

The highest level of shear strength which is being measured in direct shear experiment is known as the peak shear strength. More the shear displacement more will be there loss in strength of the soil. Residuak shear strength is the minimum and constant shear strength attained at large displacement after the peak shear strength. The peak stress for dense soil is higher as compared to loose soils as the amount of displacement in the loose soils is higher but the stress amount in loose soils keep on increasing gradually and when it become constant after attaining the peak it's value of residual stress is higher than the dense soil.
