1.What effect will THE use of a solvent with a higher dielectric constant have on the rate of propagation of chain polymerization?

2.Why is methoxymethylated nylon is more flexible than nylon?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(1) In an ionic chain polymerization the polarity and the capability of the solvent molecules to solvate the ionic species giving the chain propagation affects the rate of polymerization. In the propagation step either anionic species or cationic species are involved. But they are always associated with a counter ion.If we use polar solvent, then this oppositely charged ions will be well separated in the medium and if they are well separated, the reactivity of the active center in the propagating chain will be higher. Then the rate of reaction will also be higher.

(2)N-methoxymethyl nylon is formed by heating nylon-6,6 with formic acid and methanol to produce short side chains. Due to this side chain, methoxymethylated nylon is more flexible than nylon itself.
