Which TLC solvent system (2:1 Hexanes/Ethyl acetate or 4:1 Hexanes/Ethyl acetate) do you expect will lead to a higher Rf when analyzing banana oil? Explain your answer in DETAIL, which solvent is morepolar/nonpolar and WHY that would effect the Rf
IN TLC we always first check the polarity of solute according to that we adjust the amount of polar and non polar solvent. If our solute is polar then we take polar solvent in excess because the solute first interact with solvent which makes it travel more and have high RF value. In this our mixture is banana oil which is non polar in nature and in our solvent system hexane is non polar so we take the solvent system in which hexane amount is more. Hence here we take(4:1) hexanes/ethyl acetate system.
