The illicit drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA, also known as Ectasy) decreases the expression of the serotonin transporter in the brain. Explain how this would alter the MMDA user’s mood.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ectasy affects the brain by increasing the activity of atleast three neurotransmitters : serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. It enhances the release of these neurotransmitters and/or blocks their reuptake.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in the regulation of mood, sleep, pain, appetite and other behaviours. The excess release of serotonin by Ectasy causes mood-elevating effects that people enjoy. However, by releasing large amount of serotonin, Ectasy causes the brain to become significantly depleted of this important neurotransmitter, causing the negative psychological aftereffects like depression, paranoia etc.

2) How does the neurotransmitter serotonin influences aggression? A researcher conducts a study examining how the brain chemical serotonin is related to aggression. Two samples were collected; one sample serves as the control group which will not receive any treatment drug, the second sample receives a drug that affects serotonin and thus influences aggression. The researcher finally tests the animals by recording the number of aggressive responses. The following results were reported: Treatment group (serotonin affected):              Control group: Rat...

The only FDA approved treatment for ischemic strokes is tissue plasminogen activator* (tPA, also known as IV rtPA, given through an IV in the arm). tPA works by dissolving the clot and improving blood flow to the part of the brain being deprived of blood flow. If administered within 3 hours (and up to 4.5 hours in certain eligible patients), tPA may improve the chances of recovering from a stroke. A significant number of stroke victims don’t get to the...
