Acetone or ethanol is used to precipitate DNA out of the aqueous solution when extracting DNA from a strawberry. What structural features of DNA make it precipitate out?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Due to polar phosphate backbone DNA is highly polar. It is water soluble due to like dissolve like. But ethanol is less Polar then water . Which means addition of ethanol to aqua solution will disrupts the screening of charges with water and screen the charges. On addition of enough ethanol the electrical attraction between between phosphate groups and between positive ions which is present in the solution become strong enough to form stable ionic bonds and DNA precipitation.
