What would be a reasonable pH value (or pH range), needed to recover adipic acid from water? Describe the steps you would follow to recover adipic acid as a solid (without purification).

Thank you!!

Answer #1

Adipic acid is also known as Hexanedioic acid. It is one of the important carboxylic acid. It is a weak acid. A weak acid partially reacts with water to form hydrogen ions in aq solution. It will have pH > 3 but < 7 .

It is a crystalline solid having moderate solubility in hot water & low solubility in cold water.

1. Prep of solu - Take water in a beaker & keep for boiling.Take sample of acid in a beaker & add boiling water to dissolve it . Heating can be done.

2. Cool the solu - Let the solu come to room temp & cool it by placing in cold water.

3. Wash the crystals with water. Dry them by pressing gently between the folds of a filter paper. Transfer the crystals to a dry test tube.

What range of pH would permit the selective precipitation of Cu2+ as Cu(OH)2 from a solution that contains 0.088 M Cu2+ and 0.088 M Mn2+? For Mn(OH)2, Ksp = 1.6 × 10-13, and for Cu(OH)2, Ksp = 4.8 × 10-20. When pH = _____ – _____ Mn(OH)2 will be soluble, but some Cu(OH)2 will precipitate out of solution.
