Which technique is more sensitive to isotopic shifts: infrared or microwave spectroscopy? Explain your answer.

Which technique is more sensitive to isotopic shifts: infrared or microwave spectroscopy? Explain your answer.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Infrared spectroscopy (Vibrational spectroscopy) is more sensitive to isotopic shifts. Because rotational energies are smaller than vibrational energies, then rotational isotopic shifts also smaller than vibrational isotopic shifts.

If shifts are very smaller then peak corresponding to molecule with isotope may be merged with peak corresponding to original molecule. So it is difficult identify the peaks corresponding isotopic substituted molecule and it is difficult calculate the difference in rotational constant values of normal molecule and isotopic substituted molecule.

One way to measure ionization energies is ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS, or just PES), a technique based on the photoelectric effect. In PES, monochromatic light is directed onto a sample, causing electrons to be emitted. The kinetic energy of the emitted electrons is measured. The difference between the energy of the photons and the kinetic energy of the electrons corresponds to the energy needed to remove the electrons (that is, the ionization energy). Suppose that a PES experiment is performed...

What is Probability Sampling? Group of answer choices . a. is a technique in which every unit in the population has a chance (non-zero probability) of being selected in the sample, and this chance can be accurately determined. Sample statistics thus produced, such as sample mean or standard deviation, are unbiased estimates of population parameters, as long as the sampled units are weighted according to their probability of selection. b.is a technique where all possible subsets of a population (more...
