What are the properties of a good solvent for carrying out a crystallization? What are the factors that affect how much of a solid will dissolve in a particular solvent?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The properties of a good solvent are :

1 . The solute must be very soluble near the boiling point of the solvent and very less soluble at the room temperature.

2. It should not dissolve the impurities at high temperature , if does they should remain in dissolved form at room temperatures also.

3. The solvent must not react with the solute that has to be purified.

4. It should be volatile so that the solute can be dried easily.

The factors that affect the solubility of solid into solvent are : its polarity , its reactivity with the solid , its density , its boiling point etc.

When chemists work with solid materials, we simply weigh out amounts of solid reagents and calculate mole amounts when thinking about stoichiometry. However, when we dissolve a solid (also known as a solute) in a solvent to form a solution, the solute becomes evenly distributed throughout the solution and we need to know how many moles of solute are present in a particular volume of solution. A solution is created by dissolving 10.0 grams of ammonium chloride in enough water...

Henry’s Law for the solubility of a gas in particular solvent is expressed as C = kHP where kH is the Henry’s Law constant for a particular solute-solvent pair, with units of M/atm. 2. You have carried out a synthesis reaction and isolated the solid crude product. Scrutiny of its 1H NMR spectrum indicates the presence of an impurity, which you estimate to be approximately 6-8% of the total sample. You decide to purify it via recrystallization and know that you will first need to determine which solvent or solvent pair would be suitable. Describe what you would do and how you would evaluate your results. What properties of the solvent would you...
