Detregent function is mainly due to the amphipathic structure. Molecular structure of detergent consists of

  1. Long hydrocarbon chain
  2. Water soluble ionic group

Therefore every dtergent should have a hydrophobic and hydrophilic region in which the hydrophobic region is the region that repels water and hydrophilic means the attraction with nature. This typical structure of detergent allows them to aggregate in water media.

The properties of good detergents are:

  • Miscible with aqueous media
  • low surface tension
  • high miscibility
  • stabilization of emulsions
