Question

which of these elements are unlikely to form covalent bonds? S, H, K, Ar, Si

which of these elements are unlikely to form covalent bonds? S, H, K, Ar, Si

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Atoms make chemical bond by sharing electrons equally between each other, these bonds are called as covalent bonds. Generally covalent bonds are formed by atoms having same electronegativity i e nearly same tendancy to attract electrons.

If we see periodic table , elements placed on left hand side have tendency to loose electrons so they form generally ionic compound.

K has tendancy to form ionic bond.

Si , S are nonmetals ,they have tendency to attract electrons so they form covalent bonds.

H also forms covalent bonds.

Ar is a inert gas element and have no tendecy to form bonds.
