Consider the following three ions F2 , F2+ and F2-. Using the argument based on Molecular Orbital Theory,
i) Predict which ion would have the greater bond dissociation energy
ii)Rank the species in order of decreasingbond dissociation energy
iii) Which of these species would you expect to be paramagnetic
Illustrate answers with suitable MO diagrams
Species with greater bond dissociation energy:-
The bond length can be inferred from the bond order. The higher the bond order, the stronger the attraction between the two atoms and shorter the bond length, which in turn means stronger is the bond. The bond dissociation energy is the measure of the amount of the energy needed to break one mole of gaseous atoms.
Thus, bond order and bond dissociation energy are directly related(directly proportional) to each other. The means, higher the bond order, higher will be the bond energy.
