What is the main problem with valence bond theory?

What is the main problem with valence bond theory?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Limitations of Valence bond theory are:

(i) It does not explain the color and spectra exhibited/ shown by different co-ordination compounds.

(ii) It does not define the strength of ligands. i.e. Why some ligands act as strong and some as weak ligands.

(iii) It does not explain the magnetic property of O2 gas, which according to Valence bond theory is diamagnetic as all electrons are paired but is actually diamagnetic.

(iv) It does not include the orbital contribution in magnetic properties of complexes.

(v) VBT fails to identify the structure exhibited by 4- Coordinate spheres.
