1, Explain the concept behind valence bond theory.
2, Again, consider the CHCl3 atom.
A, How many lone pairs does the carbon have?
B, What is the hybridization of the C atom in CHCl3?
C, How many σ-bonds are there? How many π-bonds are there?
Ans 1 :
The valence bond theory explains the bonding of atoms in a molecule.
According to this theory , the covalent bond is formed between the atoms by the overlapping of valence orbitals of the atoms , which are half filled.
Due to the overlap of these orbitals , the probability of finding the electrons in this region is maximum.
When there is a head-on overlapping of orbitals , the sigma bond is formed , but when the overlapping occurs sideways , a pi bond is formed.
So a sigma bond is much more stronger than the pi bond , due to its higher extent of overlapping.
