What is the minimum atomic radius required for a cubic closest-packed metal to accommodate boron atoms (radius 88 pm) in its octahedral holes?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:-  the minimum radius of octahedral void required= 120.22 pm

Solution:-

According to radius ration for CCP

so the limiting ratio ranges from 0.414 to 0.732

so for minimum atomic radius, we have to take 0.732 as limiting radius ratio

so the relation between octahedral void and radius of the atom will be,

hence

The radius of atom = 0.732 X radius of octahedral void

So, the minimum radius of octahedral void required = 88 / 0.732

the minimum radius of octahedral void required= 120.22 pm Answer
