Determine the following to four significant figures:

(a) the percent composition of hydrazoic acid, HN3

(b) the percent composition of TNT, C6H2(CH3)(NO2)3

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(a) the percent composition of hydrazoic acid, HN3

The atomic masses of H and N are 1 g/mol and 14 g/mol respectively.

The percent of H %

The percent of N = 100 - 2.326 = 97.67 %

(b) the percent composition of TNT, C6H2(CH3)(NO2)3

THe molecular formula is C7H5N3O6

The atomic masses of C, H, N and O are 12 g/mol, 1 g/mol, 14 g/mol and 16 g/mol

Molar mass of TNT is 12 (7) + 1 (5) + 14 (3) + 16 (6) = 229 g/mol

The percent of C   %

The percent of H

The percent of N

THe percent of O

A student was asked to standardize a solution of NaOH to four significant figures. The student used a primary standard acid (MW = 204.22 g/mol), dissolved in DI water, to perform the titrations. The results of this are shown in the data table below. Assuming 1:1 stoichiometry, what was the average concentration of NaOH determined by the student?
