Name two methods by which hexylamine could be separated from benzoic acid.

Name two methods by which hexylamine could be separated from benzoic acid.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Two methods:

1. Use of acid-base extraction will seperate both of compounds.

hexylamine is basic and benzoic acid is weakly acidic. Thus, by adding aqueous NaOH to the mixture, the benzoic acid will separate out into the aqueous phase, as it becomes the benzoate which dissolves well in water. hexylamine remains in the organic phase. Then both can be separates by separating funnel. Further, acidify the aqueous layer to get benzoic acid.

2. Through distillation as hexylamine is liquid with boiling point 131.5 oC whereas benzoic acid is solid.

An unenlightened lab tech mixed together the stock of benzil and benzoic acid before the former could be used to synthesize an important drug for clinical trial. Propose a method for purifying the benzil from the mixed stock via recrystallization, based on the difference in structure between benzil and benzoic acid. (You will need a mixture of two polar solvents, with benzil being slightly less ‘like’ one than the other.)

The solubility of benzoic acid in water is known to be 1.7 g/L at 0 0C and 68.0 g/L at boiling. A student performed recrystallization starting with 0.70 g of crude benzoic acid dissolving it in 8.0 mL of water. Calculate the maximum % recovery of benzoic acid for the student and give an example of how you could increase the yield.
