1. (a) The viscosity of glycerol, CH2(OH)CH(OH)CH2(OH), is greater than that of ethylene glycol CH2(OH)CH2OH. Why?
glycerol is having 3 hydroxy functional group and ethylene glycol is having 2 hydroxy functional groups.
These hydroxy functional group can undergo intra molecular hydrogen bonding.
The number of hydrogen bondings formed by the glycerol is more than ethylene glycol. In a close proximity of particular same volume, more number of glycerol molecules can be present compared to the ethylene glycol (since, greater hydrogen bonding ability of glycerol). Which leads to the greater density in glycerol compared to ethylene glycol.
