why is Diel Alder reaction faster in water than methanol? What solvent would you choose to make the kinetics of this reaction even faster?
1)Diels-Alder reaction involves the addition of diene to dienophile. It is clssified as a pericyclic reaction (cycloaddition)brought about simply by heating i.e.thermally or photochemically. There is less effect of the solvent on the rates of this reaction. However Th e reaction is faster in water than methanol . B.P.. of methanol is 70 o C less than that of the water is 100 oCdeg. .As the reaction is brought about thermally the rate becomes faster in high b.p. solvent.
2) The Diels-Alder reaction is green reaction as it has 100% atom economy. No. side reaction product is formed. Water will be preferred solvent for study the kinetics of the reaction , however the reactants must be soluble in that solvent. DMF will be better solvent for Diels-Alder reaction for water insoluble compounds to study the kinetics of the reaction.
