1. List three ways to boost the recovery % of the desired compound upon its extraction from water by an organic solvent.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:

Based on the nature of the compound we can use the organic solvent for the extraction.

1) If the desire compound is of the Nonpolar, will use the Nonpolar solvents for the extraction.

Example: Hexane and Ethers.

2) Generally Dichloro methane and Ethyl acetate is used to extraction of the compounds from the water. These are Laboratory solvents for the extraction.

Example: Acid-amine coupled compound (Amides) and Amines.

3) If the desire compound is of the polar, will use the polar solvents for the extraction and some times the mixture of solvents can be used.

Example: Butanol, 10% Methanol in Dichloro methane and 5% Methanol in Dichloro methane.

Note:

For some of the slow extracted compounds, The aqueous layer and the solvent is stirred in the round bottom flask up to 2-3 hours and separated by useing separating funnel.
