Answer #1

The equation for the reaction is given as,

C7H6O3 + C4H6O3 ----> C9H8O4 + CH3COOH

Salicylic acid + acetic anhydride----> aspirin+ acetic acid

From the equation, we can say that 1 mole of salicylic acid gives one mole of aspirin.

Number of moles of salicylic acid reacting = given mass / molar mass = 0.5287/ 138.121 = 0.003827 mole

Hence, the number of moles of aspirin produced should be 0.003827 mole

Mass of 0.003827 mol = 0.003827*molar mass of aspirin = 0.003827*180.157 = 0.6896 g

1. The theoretical yield is 0.6896 g

2. Percentage yield = (yield / theoretical yield)*100 = 0.482/0.6896 *100 = 69.89%
