Balance the following chemical equation.
MnO2 + HCl → MnCl2 + Cl2 + H2O
2) Using the balanced chemical equation from above, consider if 0.86 mole of MnO2 and reacts in excess HCl, how many molecules of H2O will be produced?
3) If you were able to input 3.42 x 1025 molecules of HCl into the reaction above (with excess MnO2), calculate the number of moles of Cl2 produced in the reaction.
4) How many moles of iron atoms are in one mole of Fe2O3? How many iron atoms are in one mole of Fe2O3?
1) Balanced chemical equation
MnO2 + 4HCl ---------------------> MnCl2 + Cl2 + 2H2O
2) 1 mole of MnO2 produces 2 mole of water as per the balacned equation
0.86 moles MnO2 produces how many moles of water = ?
moles of water produced by 0.86 moles of MnO2 = 0.86 x 2
= 1.72 moles of water.
3) number of molecules of HCl = 3.42 x 1025
Number of moles in 3.42 x 1025 molecules of HCl = 3.42 x 1025/avagadro number
= 3.42 x 1025/ 6.02x 1023
= 56.81 moles.
4 moles of HCl produces 1 mole of chlorine
56.81 moles of HCl produces= 56.81 x1/4
= 14.202 moles of chlorine gas is produced.
4) 1 mole of Fe2O3 contains 2 moles of iron atoms.
Number of iron atoms in 1 mole of Fe2O3 = 2 x avagdro number
= 2 x 6.02x 1023
= 12.04 x 1023 iron atoms
