Which of the following solids has the highest melting point? C(s,diamond), Kr(s), NaCl(s), H2O(s). Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Melting point order : C(diamond)>NaCl(s)>H2O(s)>Kr(s)

The carbon network in the diamond are bonded with strong covalent bonds, which makes diamond stronger than NaCl ionic solid. Therefore, Diamond has highest melting point than NaCl. NaCl is followed by water solid (ice). Water has hydrogen bonding so it melts at higher temperature than Kr (s). Krypton solid has weak VanderWall forces which makes the solid. So Krypton solid melts at lowest temperature.
