In genetics the term homology is used both to refer to homolohous protein and to the gene encoding it .As with anatomical structure homology between protein or DNA sequence is defined in terms of shared ancestry because of either a speciation event (orthologs) or a duplicate event (paralogs).Homology among protein or DNA is often incorrectly concluded on the bass of sequence similarities. The term percent homology and sequence similarities are often used interchangeably.Sequence region which are homologous are also called conserved .Partial homology may result from gene fusion event.Homologous sequence are orthologous if they are separated by a speciation event, when species diverges in to two separate species.The copies of a single gene in the 2 resulting species are said to be orthologous.
