Question

how do you separate zinc chloride from SiO2?

how do you separate zinc chloride from SiO2?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Zinc chloride is soluble in water where as silicon dioxide is insoluble in water. So we can separate them as follows by using water.

Take the mixture of zinc chloride and silicon dioxide and add water to the mixture then shake them for some time and filter the solution. Zinc chloride comes into filtrate as it is soluble in water and silicon doixide remain as a residue in filter paper. Now evoparate the filterate to boil off the water then we get solid zinc chloride. Wash the silicon dioxide present in filter paper with water and heat the residue to evoparate any moisture in the residue, then we get dry silicon dioxide.
