You are presented with the following compound: 2-propanol. Describe below the series of experiments that would be necessary to perform (and what observations you would expect) to conclusively verify qualitatively that it contains an alcohol.

Answer #1

(1) Add sodium metal to the solution of the compound in a suitable solvent (such as dry ether or benzene).

The bubbles of hydrogen gas will confirm the presence of -OH group.

(2) When phosphorous pentachloride is added to solution of the compound, the mixture becomes warm with liberation of HCl gas. This will confirm the presence of -OH group.

(3) When acetyl chloride or benzoyl chloride is added to the compound, the liberation of HCl gas with separation of an oily layer will confirm the presence of -OH group. If the compound was taken in an organic solvent the oil ester may dissolve in it and the liberation of HCl has indicates the presence of -OH group.

Compound X contains only carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur. Analysis experiments produced the following results: 1. 2.52g of X burned in excess O2 produces 4.25g of carbon dioxide and 1.02g of water at 100% yield. 2. 4.14g of X reacts to produce 1.785g of sulfur trioxide and 85% yield. 3. 5.66g of X reacts to produce 1.680g of nitric acid at 75% yield. What is the empirical formula of compound X?

What is the solid product formed from the following series of reactions? You are given a mystery compound containing copper. To find its identity you perform the following steps: a. Dissolve the compound (salt) in an aqueous solution of dissolved water. b. Next, you add a strong acid (HCl). c. Lastly, you add Mg2+(s) to facilitate a redox reaction turning the Cu2+(aq) to Cu(s). The copper is now solid. What is the identity of this solid product?

Information on a certain market is presented below. You are to identify which curve or curves will move in the demand-supply model, which way they will move, and make predictions about the equilibrium price and quantity to the extent possible. 1. For each of the following observations, identify which curve will move and which way it will move. Be brief in your description using two words such as "supply left" or "demand right." Describe the curve movement as left or...
