if a student wants to perform a standardization of a NaOH solution, what is the best method to accomplish this and why is it the best method?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

standardization is essentially just a titration, executed plenty of time in order to get a correct vlaue of the normality/molarity of the solution

The best method to neutralize NaOh, is useing HCl, Hydrochloric acid

try to use similar volumes (i.e. 50 ml vs 50 ml approx) and change concnetrations ( in the order of decimals i.e. 0.1, 0.20, etc..)

then apply titration, neutralize, use pH indicator such a phenolphtalein and do calculations

mol of base = mol of acid

according to:

NaOh + Hcl = H2O + NaCl

then

M = mol/V

A student was asked to standardize a solution of NaOH to four significant figures. The student used a primary standard acid (MW = 204.22 g/mol), dissolved in DI water, to perform the titrations. Parts A.6 and B.2. For the standardization of the NaOH solution in Part A.6, the endpoint was consistently reproduced to a faint pink color. However, the endpoint for the titration of the acid solution in Part B.2 was consistently reproduced to a dark pink color. Will the reported molar concentration of the acid solution be too high, too low, or unaffected by the differences in the colors of the endpoints. Explain.

An approximately 0.1 M NaOH solution is prepared by adding 2.0 g of solid NaOH to 500 mL of water. The precise concentration of the solution is determined by titrating the NaOH against weighed portions of a weak acid, pot assium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), obtained from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and certified as being 99.99% pure. The KHP samples are weighed by difference on an analytical balance. Following its standardization, the NaOH solut ion is used...
