The unknown in Panacetin is either acetanilide or phenacetin. Regardless of which it is either one is more soluble in dichloromethane than aqueous sodium bicarbonate. Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Panacetin is a mixture of asprin + sugar + unknown acetanilide or phenacetin

Acetanilide and phenacetin are soluble in dichloromethane and insoluble in water. They are not converted into salts by aqueous sodium bicarbonate.

more polar asprin is solubulised as its acid salt when aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution is used.
