If you omitted adding water and heating again the crucible with cover fully on for an additional five minutes steps 12 and 13 from the experiment, how would this omission have affected your results in terms of the empirical formula of the magnesium oxide? In other words, would the ration of the magnesium to the oxygen have been greater of less than the obtain ratio of    MgO

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution :-

If the water is not added and the crucible is fully covered and heated for the 5 minutes then the oxygen needed to react with Mg will not be provided in the sufficient amount to produce the MgO.

The sufficient oxygen will not be available to completely react all the Mg to produce the MgO therefore the mass of the final product after the heating is complete will be less than actual need to be.

Hence the mass of oxygen added will be less which lead to the lower ratio of the Mg to O

Ratio will be less for the Mg to O

Empirical Formula of Epsom Salt Introduction Hydrates are crystalline solids that contain a fixed number of water molecules as an integral part of their crystalline structure. The number of water molecules bound per metal ion is often characteristic of that particular metal ion. One of the common hydrates is hydrated magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt). Epsom salt is used to reduce inflammation when applied externally. Epsom salts formula is sometimes written as MgSO4.xH2O. In this experiment, you will be trying to...
