In the last few years, a new species of polymer has emerged which responds to external electrical stimulation by displaying a significant displacement in shape or size. shese materials are known as electroactive polymers, or more commonly as EAPs.

They are majorly classified into two types - Electronic and Ionic.

A class of compounds called cyclooctatetrathiophenes (COTTh) can be a top choice as a polymer backbone. The advantages are:

1. Peak oxidation potential is very high almost 1.6V

2. Oxidation is electrochemically irreversible

The molecule can infact behave as a single molecule EAP
