How polar/what kind of a mobile phase is n-butanol, acetic acid, water in a 3:1:1 ratio for a TLC plate with silica gel? I am having a hard time understanding the interactions between stationary and mobile phases. Please help!

This is highly polar solvent system.

Type of Stationary phases are acidic, basic and neutral. Material composition of stationary phase is either silica or alumina.

Depending on material, solvent system has been seleceted.

According to law, 'like dissolves like', for polar compounds polar solvent are used and non polar compounds non polar solvents used.

About stationary phase, when acidic statinary phase used it pools down acidic molecule down and basic stationary phase used it pools acidic molecules down and vice versa.
