What can you conclude about the (C=O-C(subscript alpha 1)) bond rotation? What greek symbol is used to represent this bond?

What can you conclude about the (H-N-C(subscript alpha 2)) bond rotation? What greek symbol is used to represent this bond?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A C(O)-C bond rotation is represented by greek symbol sigma-sigma bond rotation. The carbonyl carbon is sp2 carbon whereas, the other carbon is an sp3 carbon. The bond rotation around sp2-sp3 carbon is feasible and is of higher energy than sp3-sp3 bond rotation.

A H-N-C bond is represented by greek symbol sigma-sigma bond rotation. The N here is sp3 hybridized and the carbon is also an sp3 hybridized carbon. The bond rotation around an sp3(N)-sp3(C) is feasible.
