A gas sample containing only POF3, C2H4 and B2H6 has the following mass percent composition: 58.5% POF3 and 5.25% C2H4. Calculate the partial pressure (torr) of POF3 if the total pressure of the sample is 8.90 atm.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Partial pressure is the pressure exerted by an individual gas in a mixuture of gases.

The total pressure of a mixture of gases is the sum total of the partial pressures of individual gases.

Ptotal = P1+P2+P3

So the partial pressure of a gas will be of the same proportion as that of its mass in the given mixture of gases.

It can be obtained by

1 atm = 760 torr

The partial pressure of PFO3 in the given sample of gas is 3956.94 torr.

In this case the composition of POF3
