You have a beaker full of H2SO4 with electrodes dipped in it which are attached to a lightbulb (and the lightbulb is on). You add a dilute solution and the bulb grows dim. Which of the following could have been added: Ba(OH)2, NaNO3, K2SO4, and/or Ca(NO3)2. Please explain your reasoning.
The chemical equations are as shown.
As can be seen from above reactions, when barium hydroxide is added to solution, no ions are formed. In this reaction sulphuric acid (which conducts electricity due to ionisation) is consumed and hence, there is decrease in the electrical conduction due to addition of barium hydroxide. Hence, the bulb will glow dim.
In all other cases, since the products ionize, there will not be any decrease in the electrical conductivity. Hence, the bulb will not glow dim.
