Question

Which of the following has the lowest boiling point? propanamide, ethanoic acid, isopropanol, methyl methanoate

Which of the following has the lowest boiling point? propanamide, ethanoic acid, isopropanol, methyl methanoate

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Propanamide, Ethanoic acid, Isopropanol have hydrogen atoms attached with electronegative atoms ( for propanamide Hydrogen is attached with Nitrogen and for other two it is attached with oxygen). So they can form intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

But methyl methanoate is an ester. It has no hydrogen atom attached with oxygen atom. So it is incapable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonding thus have lower boiling points than other three compounds.

Therefore, methyl methanoate has the lowest boiling point.
