Compare two IR spectrums of [bmim]Br and [bmim]PF6. How are they different? How are they the same?
The IR spectra of both these ionic liquids will be quite similar except for some characteristics peaks. In the structure of BMIM cation, the carbon atom between two N-centers have the most acidic H-atom due to the electron deficit to the C=N pi-bond. Frequance of (C(2)–H) for [BMIM]PF6 comes near 3110 cm-1 which is around 100 cm-1 blue-shifted from the [BMIM]Br. This difference can be attributed to the weaker hydrogen bonding within the [BMIM]PF6 than the [BMIM]Br.
