Al(NO3)3

1)What is the Hydrolysis Net ionic equation

2)Write the Ka or Kb expression?

3)What is the valuse of the Ka or Kb?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1) Write the complete molecular equation as

Al(NO3)3 (aq) + 3 H2O (l) ---------> Al(OH)3 (s) + 3 HNO3 (aq)

Decompose the aqueous species into ions and write

Al3+ (aq) + 3 NO3- (aq) + 3 H2O (l) ---------> Al(OH)3 (s) + 3 H+ (aq) + 3 NO3- (aq)

Cancel out the common terms and write the net ionic equation as

Al3+ (aq) + 3 H2O (l) --------> Al(OH)3 (aq) + 3 H+ (aq)

2) Al(OH)3 (s) is a base and partially ionizes to produce hydroxide ion as below.

AL(OH)3 (s) <=======> Al3+ (aq) + 3 OH- (aq)

Since OH- is produced, we work with Kb.

Kb = [Al3+][OH-]3

3) The pKa value of Al(OH)3 is reported as 11.2.

It is known that

pKa = -log (Ka)

=====> log (Ka) = -pKa

=====> Ka = antilog (-pKa)

=====> Ka = 6.309*10-12 ≈ 6.31*10-12 (ans).
