We performed extractions of caffeine from soda and have to answer a question:
Would the yield of caffeine go up, or down if you extracted caffeine straight from the can?
Please help by explaining your answer. Thank you!
The extraction of coffeine from soda is possible and will be very time consuming and your yields would more than likely not be quantitative. Easiest way would be chromatography. Coffeine can be extracted by mixing the soda with a organic solvent (prfered the solvent whcih are denser than water like dichloromethane) and then extracting out that solvent. This should do multiple times and collect all the organic solution and evoperate the organic solvent and recover the caffeine. But if you are using directly from the can, there is a chance of getting more yield. because the soda contain many more other compounds also. may contain sugar, Tannine etc. If these compounds are solubil in your extracting solvent, then all will come in the extracted solution and it will increase the yield.
