In the synthesis of aniline lab experiment, I have the following post-lab question which I do not know how to answer. Please help, be thorough, and please also describe any intermolecular forces at work. Thank you for your help and time.

"If NaOH was not added to the solution, and you then extracted with methylene chloride, what layer/phase would the product be found in? Why?"

Homework Answers

Answer #1

if NaOH is not added, then the aniline will be present as "molecular" and not as "ionic"

note that

aniline in acidic media --> AnilineH+, has been protonated, then

this is soluble in water mostly

also note that if we add NAOH, we change the aniline from protonated +1, state to neutrla, 0 state

the aniline is organic, will be much more soluble in the orgnaic media (methylene chloride)

therefore, if no NaOH was added... choose organic layer (in the methylene chloride)

The Question: Why was the reaction mixture from this experiment extracted with sodium carbonate? What gas is evolved during the addition? Write out the reaction(s) and explain why it is necessary to do this extraction. The only part of this question I know is that CO2 is the gas formed because we saw it in lab but I need help answering this question for my lab workup. Organic Chemictry Lab Post Lab Questions (Acid-Base Extraction) 1.) In this experiment, if the carboxylic acid is benzoic acid, how many moles of benzoic acid are present (assume an equal portion of each component)? How many moles of sodium bicarbonate are contained in 1 mL of a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate. Is the amount of sodium bicarbonate sufficient to react with all of the benzoic acid? 2.) To isolate the benzoic acid from the bicarbonate solution, the bicarbonate solution is...

My Post Lab questions are asking me this about my caffeine experiment. "You perform a TLC experiment on a product that you obtained in the lab. When you put it under the UV lamp, you see only one spot. Upon further analysis, however, you realize that there are actually two compounds in the sample. Give two reasons why this could happen, and then suggest how you could modify the experiment to overcome each one" I do not know why this...

I am writing up a lab report on the synthesis of phenacetin from para-acetamidophenol,(using sodium ethoxide and ethyl iodide as catalyst) and in need of the following; -Observations during the experiment(very important) -Sources of errors -Improvements -Comment on the appearance of product formed. Thank you.

I recently performed a lab on Chemical Equilibrium. Here is some background on the experiment: -We made a stock solution by combining Fe(NO3)3 and NH4SCN. This made a blood red solution. Then, we added different reagents to see the change of color and the shift of equilibrium. I'm being asked the following question: Based on the color of solutions reported, determine the direction of the reaction's: Fe^3+(aq)+SCN^- --> [FeSCN]^2+(aq) equilibrium shift upon each addition of each reagent investigated and write...

Hello, I have a quick question regarding an experiment. The goal is to find the molar mass/identity of the unknown acid that I titrated with 0.09758M NaOH solution. The unknown acid is a diprotic weak acid. The pH at equivalence point 1 is 4.62 at 20.00mL and pH at the second equivalence point is at 8.56 at 40.00mL. The molar mass of the acid that was dissolved in 50ml of DI water was 0.2531g. Also, help me identify the unknown...
