Question

when is oxidation not combustion? When is combustion not oxidation?

when is oxidation not combustion?

When is combustion not oxidation?

Homework Answers

Answer #2

Whenever a reaction involves the increase in oxidation state of the element , the reaction is called as oxidation reaction . The products of these reactions need not to be CO2 and H2O always . These reactions can also be endothermic .

So not all oxdation reactions are combustion reactions .

The combustion reactions are the complete oxidation of hydrocarbons giving CO2 and H2O as the product . So all combustion reactions are oxidation reactions . And they are always exothermic , as heat is released.

Calculate the enthalpy of combustion. Write a balanced combustion reaction for the oxidation of your substance to CO2 and H2O. From the stoichiometry of this reaction and the amount of sample you used, find delta(PV) and thus calculate deltaH. Compare your value of deltaH with the literature value. deltaH = deltaU + delta(nRT) = delta U + RT(delta n). the combustion equation is C12H22O11(s)+12O2(g)arrow12CO2(g)+11H2O(l) for sucrose. Oxidation-Reduction “redox” type reactions are just one of many different forms of a chemical reaction. Combustion reactions fall under the umbrella of redox reactions. Explain what is happening in a redox reaction. What happens to an element that is oxidized? What happens to an element that is reduced? What is an oxidizing agent, and a reducing agent? Finally, assign oxidation numbers and identify what is being oxidized, what is being reduced, and what is the oxidizing and reducing agent for...

An oxidation reactor is being fed with air to aid in the combustion. The air must first be heated from 25°C to 300°C at 1 atm pressure and the specific enthalpy change associated with this temperature change for air is 8170 J/mol. The inlet velocity of air is 5 m/s in pipe of 0.5 m ID (inside diameter). You may consider the gas to be ideal. a. What is the inlet flow rate of air (mol/min)? b. Given that the...
