Which of the following statements concerning a voltaic cell is/are correct?

1.Reduction occurs at the anode.

2.A spontaneous reaction generates an electric current in a voltaic cell.

3.Without a salt bridge charge buildup will cause the cell reaction to stop.

a. 1 only

b. 2 only

c. 3 only

d. 1 and 2

e. 2, and 3

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The statement is false because reduction occurs at anode in voltaic cell.

Spontantaneous redox reactions produce electric current in a voltaic cell.Hence statement 2 is true.

The purpose of salt bridge is not to move electrons but to maintain electrical neutrality. If there would be no salt bridge then the solution in one half cell would accumulate negative charge and solution in one half cell would accumulate positive charge and hence reaction will stop.

Hence statement 3 is true.

The answer is option e. 2 and 3
