CHEM 114 ‐ Lab Experiment 7 Equilibrium I – Determination of an Equilibrium Constant

3. In this lab, the measurement wavelength on the colorimeter was set at 470 nm.  This measurement wavelength was the best choice available on the colorimeter but it was not the best chemical choice for measuring the absorbance of FeSCN2+.

a. In terms of instrument sensitivity, explain why the choice of wavelength on the colorimeter is important.

b. Since the wavelength setting was not the ideal wavelength (max) for these absorbance measurements, do you expect the value for your absorbance readings taken by the colorimeter to be too high, too low, or accurate? Explain.

c. What experiment could you do, what data would you collect, and how would you analyze the data to determine the best setting for measuring the absorbance of FeSCN2+? Be sure to fully explain how your experiment and the resulting data would allow you to determine the wavelength of maximum absorbance for the FeSCN2+ complex.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

3.

a. When the accurate wavelength max is used, the absorbance is maximum and less error in meaurement is possible. Higher the value, lower chances of errors exists. The sensitivity of the instrument such that error in measurement is minimal.

b. When wavelength max choosen is not the accurate one, the resulting absorbance values would be too low.

c. We should take absorbance readings at different wavelengths and see where we get maximum absorbance to calculate wavelength max for the complex.

(Evaluating the Equilibrium Constant for the Reaction of Iron(III)Ion with Thiocyanate Ion) 1. When measuring the volumes of Fe(NO3)3 and NaSCN solutions in this experiment, the student mistakenly used a graduated cylinder instead of volumtetric pipets, After collecting all of the data, the student realized he'd used the wrong piece of equipment, but he didn't redo the experiment. Also, he later realized that he had consistenly misread the graduated cylinder and had thus transferred volumes that were actually 5% lower...

I recently performed a lab on Chemical Equilibrium. Here is some background on the experiment: -We made a stock solution by combining Fe(NO3)3 and NH4SCN. This made a blood red solution. Then, we added different reagents to see the change of color and the shift of equilibrium. I'm being asked the following question: Based on the color of solutions reported, determine the direction of the reaction's: Fe^3+(aq)+SCN^- --> [FeSCN]^2+(aq) equilibrium shift upon each addition of each reagent investigated and write...

I have provided the information for the lab below. I want to see the chemical reactions that take place during each step of the experiment. So in the procedures when a chemical was added i would like to see what the products and byproducts that were formed. I also want to see one over all reaction for this experiment to just get an overview of what exactly is happening during the experiment. Thank you:) Part B: Synthesis of [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl2 Objective:...

Activity 1: Scientific Reports You may have heard the question “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” A similar question can be asked about experiments. “If a researcher performs an experiment and never publishes the result has science been performed?” Many people would say no because science is the accumulation of knowledge. If the results of an experiment are not published, knowledge is not gained. The final...
