During crystallization of a pure cyclohexane the temperature stays constant until all the cyclohexane is crystallized. However, during the crystallization of a solution of naphthalene in cyclohexane the temperature gradually decreases. Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution :-

In the crystallization of the pure cyclohexane the phase change of the substance takes place at the constant temperature therefore the temperature remains same until all the cylohexane crystallizes,

In contrast in the crystallization of the naphthalene the temperature of the solution gradually decreases as naphthalene starts crystallizing because the phase change of the naphthalene from aqueous to solid is endothermic process means absorbing the energy from the solvent or solution therefore it causes the decrease in the temperature of the solution as naphthelene crystallizes.

as a solution freezes, the solid that forms is essentially pure, frozen solvent without any solute molecules incorporated. With this in mind, explain why the freezing point of a solution slowly decreases with time rather than stays constant as with the freezing point of a pure solvent.

The acetone-cyclohexane system also exhibits positive deviations from Raoult’s Law. Sketch the expected temperature-composition phase diagram for this system given the following: bp (pure acetone) = 56.5oC, bp (pure cyclohexane) = 81.4oC, azeotrope occurs at ca. 0.25 mole fraction cyclohexane and boils at 53 oC. All bp’s are cited for P = 1 atmosphere. Increased temperature increases the rate of all chemical reactions. However, increased temperature in some cases increases and in other cases decreases the proportion of product relative to unreacted starting material. Draw reaction energy diagrams for exergonic and endergonic reactions, and explain why in both cases higher temperature increase the reaction rate, but has opposite effect on proportion of product.

Calculating Equilibrium Constants. The equilibrium constant, K, of a reaction at a particular temperature is determined by the concentrations or pressures of the reactants and products at equilibrium. For a gaseous reaction with the general form aA+bB⇌cC+dD the Kc and Kp expressions are given by Kc=[C]c[D]d[A]a[B]b Kp=(PC)c(PD)d(PA)a(PB)b The subscript c or p indicates whether K is expressed in terms of concentrations or pressures. Equilibrium-constant expressions do not include a term for any pure solids or liquids that may be involved...
