I’m performing a lab where we must determine the percent of carbonate in an unknown through titration. I need to know how doing this experiment applies in the real world. Could someone help me understand this experiment through real-world examples?

Answer #1

There are many metals found in their carbonate form in the earth crust. to extract the metal we have to remove it from its carbonate form. That can be done when we know the amount of carbonate precent. The carbonate composition in a compound also let us know the total mass of the compound with which the other element can be guessed. Like Calcium, it is found in the form of CaCO3. To extract calcium from it we need to determine the percent of carbonate, with which it will be easier to know that calcium extraction is going to be economical or not.

Cation Group III Quantitative Analysis Lab? We just completed our unknown lab, where we are given a test tube with some of the Group III cations (Zn, Cr, Mn, Fe, Al, Ni, Co, and we dont know which are present) and we need to write a discussion about certain chemical concepts, and I am stuck on some. http://web.cerritos.edu/cshimazu/SitePages/Chem%20112/112%20Experiments/5%20Cation%20III%20Part%20B/Cation%20III%20Part%20B.pdf (That is the lab handout in case I don't make sense) So we need to write about equilibrium, and explain it using...

I recently did a lab where we used a Styrofoam coffee cup calorimeter to determine the specific heat of an unknown metal. We just determined our "calorimeter constant." We now have to re-do all of our prior calculations to include this new constant. I may have written down the wrong equation, so could someone show me an example given the following information? Heat capacity of calorimeter: 41.6 J/gC Mass of metal: 43.0760g Mass of water: 20.6314g Delta T water: 21.1...

I'm doing a chemistry lab, where I have to determine the molar mass of an unknown after finding the vapor density. So basically, I have to put 3 test-tubes in a hot water bath, after measuring their volume, and mass the test tube + condensed unknown. So, if, hypothetically, there was some unknown liquid left in the test tube when we were massing the test tube after we heated them, how would the experimental molar mass change? Would it increase...

The Question: Why was the reaction mixture from this experiment extracted with sodium carbonate? What gas is evolved during the addition? Write out the reaction(s) and explain why it is necessary to do this extraction. The only part of this question I know is that CO2 is the gas formed because we saw it in lab but I need help answering this question for my lab workup. Here is the lab information: The lab: was the synthesis of an ester...

Chemistry question- In chemistry lab we were determining the composition of a TUMs tablet. We wanted to find out how much calcium carbonate there was in the TUMs tablet and how much HCl was neutralized by the TUMS tablet (calcium carbonate). The questions that we are supposed to answer are A) calculate mols of NaOH used in titration B) Calculate mols of HCl neutralized by TUMs tablet C) Calculate mols of CaCO3 reacted D) Calculate grams of CaCO3 reacted E)...

Pre-Lab Notes: In this experiment you will react a mixture of sodium nitrite,NaNO2, and sodium chloride, NaCl, of unknown composition with anexcess of sulfamic acid, HSO3NH2. The NaCl is unreactive underthese conditions whereas the NaNO2 reacts to form nitrogen gas byfollowing equation."...

So I did a titration lab where were reacted various amounts of Mg with 10mL of HCL and then neutralized the raction with NaOH. I have my table of values for Mass of Mg (g), Initial Volume NaOH (mL), Final Volume NaOH (mL), End Point Volume (mL), Limiting Reagent (Mg or HCL). There is a Titration table I need to fill in that asks for Moles of Mg (mol), Moles of NaOH (mol) and Moles of H+ reacting with Mg...

I had a lab where we had to find the frictional force of a system. A cart was let go at the top of a 15 degree incline and the time it took the cart to reach the bottom of the incline was measured. I need to find the change in energy of the system. The distance is 90cm. The velocity of the cart was 0.517 m/s. The force it took for the cart to go up was 2.08 N...

This is part of our lab where we put styrafoam plates on a Van de Graaf generator: STATION 2: Styrofoam plates. Observe the plates on the board. They were placed there after rubbing their back sides on the VdG generator. Notice that if it’s not too humid, that you can take them off and put them back again There is obviously no adhesive holding them there. Q5) How are they sticking? Would just any Styrofoam plate stick to the board?...
