What effect dose the removal of CO2 from water through aeration have on each of the three kinds of alkalinity found present in natural water?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The reaction when carbon dioxide removed from water through areation process IS

H2O + CO2 = HCO3- + H+

The main three kinds of alkalinity if natural water are due to hydroxides, carbonates and bicarbonates.

converting bicarboante to carbonic acid lowers the pH, When CO2 is removed the following reactions happend

HCO3- + H+ -----> H2CO3 ------>H2O +CO2

when co2 is removed the two euilibria shifts towards the right.when co2 is rmoved consequently lowering the bicbonate so lowering the alkalinity.

Possible Duplicate: What experiments prove the greenhouse effect? I am seeking for a proof that CO2 is a greenhouse gas. I posted this on Skeptic.SE recently but found no help in seeking for proof: I assisted to a physicist conference in my university a few years ago against the case that carbon dioxide was a cause of global warming. The main point was that CO2 is not a greenhouse gas. I did a research to find evidence for either side...

A nitric acid solution, pH=2.7, results from NOx removal from a stack gas. Neglect ionic strength effects and the temperature is 25oC. How much Na2CO3 must be added to neutralize this solution prior to discharge? (the final pH=8.3. Assume that no weak acids are present in the scrubber water.) What is the buffer intensity of the final solution? I figured out the first question already. But I have no idea how to calculate the buffer intensity.............

A sample of rainwater is observed to have a pH of 7.49. If only atmospheric CO2 at 400 ppm and limestone dust are present in the atmosphere to alter the pH from a neutral value, and if each raindrop has a volume of 0.0147 cm3, what mass of calcium (in ng) is present in each raindrop?
