describe the electronic structure of carboon nanotube

describe the electronic structure of carboon nanotube

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The electronic structure of each C atom is 1s22s22px12py12pz0.Carbon atoms in graphite are sp2 hybrized. In graphite the carbon atoms are hexagonally arranged to form layers. Each such layer is known as graphene. In graphite the layers are arranged at a distance of 0.34 nm between two layers. Fullerenes contain large cage like structures of about 60 or more carbon atoms.Carbon nanotubes have cylindrical structures containing graphite sheets with hemispherical fullerenes or a graphite sheet at the ends. The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes depend on the wedge angle of the graphite sheets.

It is predicted that with Nanotube transistors, a 11% reduction in the power dissipation can be achieved overall in a 3-year period. A contemporary computer chip, in 2020, dissipates 50 Watts on an area of one-centimeter square. If the contemporary transistor elements are replaced with nanotube transistors, estimate the power that will be needed for one-centimeter square Si chip in 2026, assuming the Moore’s law trend continues.
