What is an azeotrope? Would it be possible to separate the components of an azeotope by fractional distillation? Explain.
Azeotropes are constant boiling liquids i.e.- some of the liquid solvent when mixed together they tend to boil at a constant temperature and their composition remains unchanged throughout the distillation process. As a result of which it is impossible to separate them via fractional distillation. Azeotropes may be maximum boiling azeotropes or negative azeotrope i.e.- possess boiling point higher than each of the component mixed (Ex- nitric acid and water ) or minimum boiling azeotropes or positive azeotrope i.e.- possess boiling point higher than each of the component mixed (Ex- Eethanol and water mixture )
