Question

What are the oxidation states for the following compounds? Na2(IrCl6) Fe(acac)3 RhCl(PPh3)3 Ba[Re(H)9] Mo(CO)6

What are the oxidation states for the following compounds?

Na2(IrCl6)

Fe(acac)3

RhCl(PPh3)3

Ba[Re(H)9]

Mo(CO)6

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Na2(IrCl6)

Let us consider the x to be the oxidation state of the central metal atom. Ir is the central metal atom. Here the oxidation state of Na is +1. Charge of Cl is -1.

Now, x + 6x(-1) = 2 =>x = +4

Fe(acac)3: Let x is the oxidation state of Fe and the charge of acac is -1.

x + 3 x (-1) = 0 => x = +3

RhCl(PPh3)3 : Let x is the oxidation state of Rh and the charge of Cl is -1 and PPh3 is 0.

x + (-1) + 0 = 0 => x = +1

Ba[Re(H)9]: Let x is the oxidation state of Re and the charge of H is -1 and the oxidation state of Ba is +2.

x + 9 x (-1) = -2 => x = +7

Mo(CO)6: Let x is the oxidation state of Mo; charge of CO is 0

x + 0 = 0 => x = 0
